Nagpur: The death of an intern doctor from Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (Mayo) on Saturday has caused a stir. The intern, Faiz Mohammad Khan (22), who resided on Kamptee Road, succumbed to injuries sustained in a serious accident on Kamptee Road. After being admitted to Mayo Hospital, it is reported that doctors there referred him to Medical College Hospital for treatment without administering any initial care. Unfortunately, he passed away en route, prompting an uproar among fellow intern doctors who confronted the Dean, Dr. Ravi Chavan.

Dr. Chavan took the matter seriously and established an inquiry committee, assuring that those found responsible will face action as per regulations. According to sources, Faiz was in the final month of his internship after completing his MBBS from Mayo.

On Saturday morning, Faiz met with an accident and was rushed to Mayo’s emergency department with severe head injuries. The resident doctors in the surgery department examined him but, due to the absence of a neurosurgeon at Mayo, referred him to the Trauma Care Center at the Medical College Hospital. The doctors there declared him dead upon examination.

Intern doctors questioned Dr. Chavan as to why Faiz was referred to another facility instead of being treated at Mayo. In response, Dr. Chavan promptly formed an inquiry committee and ordered an immediate report.

Need for Neurosurgeons at Mayo

Mayo Hospital frequently receives accident victims, some of whom urgently need a neurosurgeon. However, due to the absence of this position at Mayo, patients are often referred to the Trauma Care Center at the Medical College Hospital, which can be time-consuming and life-threatening. The tragic death of the intern doctor has highlighted the urgent need for a neurosurgeon at Mayo once again.
