Nagpur: In a shocking turn of events, Ritika Malu, who was involved in the fatal accident on the Ramjhula bridge while driving a Mercedes under the influence, surrendered to the police on Monday. Following her surrender, the Tahsil police presented Malu in court yesterday. During the hearing, the police requested her PCR (Police Custody Remand), which was opposed by Malu’s lawyer. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court deemed her arrest illegal and rejected the PCR request, ordering her immediate release. This decision has come as a significant setback for the Nagpur police. Consequently, after consulting with senior officials, the Tahsil police have initiated steps to appeal the decision in a higher court.

Why the Court Rejected the PCR

After the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court rejected Malu’s anticipatory bail plea, her arrest was imminent. However, according to the lower court, it was necessary for the police to obtain permission from the relevant court before arresting Ritika Malu, a step they failed to follow. This technicality worked in Malu’s favor, leading to the court’s order for her release.

Background of the Incident
