Nagpur: A routine fraud investigation by Nagpur police has led to the uncovering of illegal wildlife poaching activities. The investigation team, led by Senior Police Inspector Manish Thackeray and officers Ravindra, Amol, Pramod, and Sanjay, was originally looking into a case of forged documents used for school admissions.
The case, registered under number 324/2024, involved parents who allegedly paid criminals to create fake documents to secure their children’s admission into prestigious schools under the Right to Education Act of 2009. These documents were used to defraud the Maharashtra state government.
During the investigation, Raja Jamshed Sharif, 33, residing near Anant Nagar bus stop in Nagpur, was arrested. An Apple mobile phone in Sharif’s possession was seized, revealing shocking evidence. The phone contained photos and videos of poaching protected wildlife, including barasingha (swamp deer), deer, and nilgai (blue bull), as well as images of illegally felled teak trees estimated to be around 50 years old.
The investigation determined that Sharif and his associates conducted these illegal activities in Barghat/Sivni, Madhya Pradesh. Nagpur police promptly coordinated with the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department. On July 27, 2024, the State Tiger Strike Force Unit from Jabalpur, including ACF and RO officials, arrived in Nagpur to take over the investigation and the evidence collected.
Furthermore, explicit and defamatory chat messages involving a minor were discovered on Sharif’s phone. Legal proceedings have been initiated regarding these findings, and the case has been transferred to the police station in Seoni, Madhya Pradesh, for further action.
