Nagpur: Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Wednesday caught Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) Mahesh Nikam, attached to Rana Pratap Nagar Police Station, red-handed while demanding and accepting Rs 5,000 bribe from a lawn owner for not initiating action against him for hosting late night parties.
PSI Nikam (33), who is a native of village Mehu, Taluka Pawda, district Jalgaon, allegedly approached the lawn owner and demanded Rs 5,000 per month for allowing him to operate his business in the late night. As PSI Nikam allegedly started harassing the 33-year old owner of the lawns in Pratap Nagar area, the latter lodged a complaint with the bureau officers.
The ACB sleuths verified the complaint of May 14 and laid a trap on Wednesday. As soon as PSI Nikam accepted the cash from the owner of the lawns, a team of ACB personnel caught him.
A case under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against PSI Nikam at Rana Pratap Nagar Police Station. Bureau officers also conducted search operations at his rented accommodation at Pragati Nagar, Jaitala.
The trap was laid by PI Nilesh Urkude, PI Preeti Shende, constabulary staff comprising Bharat Thakur, Bhagwat Wankhede, Upendra Akotkar, Hemant Ganjre, Deepali Bhagat and Priya Neware under the supervision of Superintendent of Police (ACB) Rahul Maknikar and Additional SP Sanjay Purandare.
