Nagpur ranks second in the nearly 1.90 lakh cases that were disposed off by Maharashtra Legal Service Authority (MLSA) in its recent special drive that covered majority of districts. The analysis by the authority of pendency of lakhs of cases found that litigations were pending due to complainants not turning up.

Thane and Pune ranked first and third in the cases that were disposed off.
National Legal Service of Authority had declared November 23 to be observed as National Lok Adalat Day. A total of 4,13,976 cases were settled in the state on that day.

MLSA member secretary SB Bahalkar said, “While studying pendency from various courts we found that some matters were pending for over a decade. Complainants were not turning up in court despite repeated attempts. In many cases, complainants were dead or accused had died or witnesses in the cases were not turning up. The courts were unaware about it and used to give date after date leading to pendency. With the party not turning up despite repeated attempts, it was decided to dispose off the cases.”

According to Bahalkar, the cases that were resolved involved petty offences like grievance hurts, motor accidents etc.
