Nagpur: Covid-19 cases in Vidarbha increased significantly in July and surpassed total infections detected in the previous four months (March to June). Nagpur district reported 5,205 new cases in July. More than 4,000 of them came from Nagpur city, according to reports.
The region has reported 12,256 new cases of Covid-19 in 31 days of July. This is a sharp rise as compared to June when the region reported 2,328 cases, May (154), April (71) and March (632). The July tally is way less than the peak of the third wave in January when the highest in a day was 1,24,083 cases. According to experts, the numbers may not climb so high during the current wave because many asymptomatic as well as symptomatic patients are not even opting for test.
The age-wise bifurcation of cases in the district shows that the highest number of patients (38%) are between 20-40 age groups. Almost 15% cases came from the paediatric age-group (0-19). The male-female patient ratio is 60-40, which has remained constant since the first Covid outbreak.
Even as cases rose sharply in July, the majority of the patients are recovering in home isolation and less than 5% are requiring hospitalization. Very few of those hospitalized need oxygen supply and the need for ventilator support is also negligible, as per the treating doctors.
Only one death each was reported in April, May and June. March’s toll was four. But July reported 17 deaths. Of them, 15 deaths were reported in the last 10 days of the month. Experts said, the peak of the fourth wave is still far but it won’t be as intense as it was in the third wave.
In January and February, when the cases had reached the peak during the third wave, the region had reported 201 and 177 deaths, respectively. The toll had gone up even as the curve started bending downwards.
