Nagpur: The Local Crime Branch (LCB) of Nagpur Rural Police has made a significant breakthrough in their efforts to crackdown on illegal tobacco trade. The LCB raided a godown in Umred and seized banned scented tobacco worth over Rs 23.47 lakh.
The accused had stored seven types of scented tobacco, which are banned, and were being supplied to nearby areas, Gadchiroli, and Chandrapur districts, police said. The godown owner, identified as Gopal Tulshiram Choudhary (61), was arrested in connection with the illegal trade. However, his son Sandip (35), who imported the tobacco from Madhya Pradesh, is currently on the run.
A police official said that the banned tobacco brands that were seized by the police include Eagle tobacco, Hola tobacco, Virat tobacco, Maza 108, Ratna 300, Pan Parag, Silver Packets, and others.
An offence was registered at Umred police station against the black marketeers. The LCB’s efforts in this operation were praised by the Superintendents of Police (SP) Vishal Anand, Addl SP Dr. Sandip Pakhale.
The raid was conducted by Police Inspector LCB Omprakash Kokate, along with API Ashishsingh Thakur and other staff including Arvind Bhagat, Narendra Patle, MilindNandurkar, Rajesh Rewatkar, Balaji Sakhre, Ajiz Sheikh, Mayur Dhekle, and Amrut Kinge.
The official said that their efforts to crackdown on the illegal trade of tobacco and other banned substances would continue. The absconding accused will be caught by the police soon, he said.
