Nagpur swimmer Ishwari bags 3 golds in National Para Championship

Nagpur: Ace para swimmer Ishwari Pande of Nagpur set the pool on fire claiming triple golds in the 24th National Para Swimming Championship that concluded in Panaji, Goa on Monday.

Visually impaired Ishwari, participating in the S11 Junior Category, pocketed three gold medals. She won the 50m backstroke with a timing of one minute and 11 seconds. Her second gold came in the 50m freestyle event. She clocked a mere 57 seconds while her one minute and 27 seconds in the 50m breaststroke earned her the third yellow metal.

Ishwari is a member of Shark Aquatic Sporting Association and trains at NIT Swimming Pool under the watchful eyes of NIS swimming coach Sanjay Batwe.

Jennifer bags UTT bronze

City’s table tennis prodigy Jennifer Varghese won a bronze medal in women’s category in the UTT National Ranking Tournament underway in Goa on Monday. This is for the first time that Jennifer has bagged a medal in women’s category at national level. She was the State champion in the women’s category in 2023.

After getting a first round bye, Jennifer got the better of Soumya Das, then Maharashtra duo of Pritha Vartikar and Suhana Saini to book a quarter-final date with Kaushani Nath of RSPB. In the quarters, Jennifer dropped just one game to record a 12-10, 11-7, 10-12, 12-10 win to enter the semi-finals.

In the last-four match, Jennifer was outplayed by PSPB’s Yashaswini Ghorpade in straight four games 8-11, 7-11, 6-11, 8-11 and had to settle for a bronze. Ghorpade lost to Sutirtha Mukherjee of RSPB 4-2 in the final. Jennifer is being trained by R Rajesh in Chennai.
