Nagpur: International sea swimmer of Nagpur 22-year-old Jayant Jaiprakash Duble has set a new record by swimming the English Channel (two-way). A new Asian record has been established after India became the first team from the Asian continent to complete a distance of 70 kilometres from England to France and back in 31 hours and 29 minutes, informs a press release.

Jayant and company set the record by swimming the English Channel which is considered as the Mount Everest of adventure swimming. Indian team comprised Snehan NA (TN), Satendra Singh (Para swimmer, MP), Kusnoor Shiva Kumar (Para swimmer, Telangana), Rimo Saha (Para swimmer, West Bengal) and Elvis Ali Hazarika (Assam).

Earlier, swimmers from European countries have achieved this feat. Jayant started the sea swimming expedition by setting sail in the English Channel in the Atlantic Ocean at Shakespeare Beach, Dover, London on July 18. Immediately after reaching Vincent Beach in France, he set for his return journey. Jayant swam all night and reached the White Clips Beach in Dover, London on July 19 afternoon.

Jayant and his team braved the cold water of 13 to 15 degrees Celsius, the high waves created by the fast wind, as well as swarms of jellyfish in the water and achieved the feat. Narrating his experience, Jayant said, “I was able to set this record only because of determination, hard work and proper guidance and support of my team members. For the past three years, I have been dreaming of swimming in the English Channel. I am very happy that I fulfilled my dreams.”

During the training Jayant was attacked by jellyfish but that did not deter him. “After seeing my courage and practice, Jennifer and Jeff encouraged me which helped me increase my confidence. My adventurous swimming will encourage many young swimmers in the country,” he said.

Jayant practised in Nagpur under his father international swimmer Dr Jaiprakash Duble and Dr Sambhaji Bhosle. Jayant now aims to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. “The 2028 Olympics will be held in Los Angeles. The swimming event will also include a 10 kms open water swimming event. My aim is to represent India in it. In this regard, I am trying to go to the Sea Swimming Training Centre in Los Angeles for practice,” said Jayant.
