Nagpur: Under the animal exchange programme, Nagpur’s Maharajbagh Zoo will get 10 blackbucks and three four-horned antelopes (Chousingha) from Kanan Pendari Zoological Garden, Bilaspur soon.
Maharajbagh zoo, which already has one male Chousingha, will get one more male and two female Chousinghas from Bilaspur Zoo. The Maharajbagh Zoo had lost all of its blackbucks in September 23 heavy rains and flood last year. The rain water entered the enclosure of blackbucks in the zoo, due to which all the herbivores drowned in the flood water. Since then, the management of Maharajbagh Zoo was in contact with Bilaspur Zoo for the transfer of 10 blackbucks.
The Nagpur based zoo first got permission from Bilaspur Zoo and now, it has also got the green signal from the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) for transfer of animals. The permission from CZA is mandatory for transfer of animals from one zoo to another.
It is the second such big transfer of animals that is taking place in Maharajbagh Zoo in the last 13 months. In February last year, Maharajbagh Zoo received three pairs of Hog Deer and two Peahens from the same Bilaspur Zoo. In exchange, Maharajbagh Zoo sent a leopard to Bilaspur Zoo last year.
