Nagpur’s Vishwaja is State champion in Under-9 Girls Chess

Nagpur: Vishwaja Deshmukh, chess prodigy of Nagpur, triumphed in the H2e Power Systems Maharashtra State Under-9 Girls Chess Championship that concluded at Solapur. She finished atop with an impressive score of 7 points from eight games competing against 70 participants from across the State.

Starting the tournament as 6th seed, Vishwaja demonstrated exceptional skills and composure throughout her matches. A key moment in her journey came when she faced the top seed Tvesha Jain. Vishwaja capitalised on a blunder by Tvesha to secure a pivotal victory.

In the must-win final round, Vishwaja displayed remarkable determination by getting the better of Thane’s Uttara Karthik. She is being coached by Gurpreet Singh Maras and Siddhant Gaikwad.

Vritika selected for U-13 Nationals

Nagpur’s upcoming chess player Vritika Game performed well in the Under-13 Girl Chess Championship that concluded in Pune. Vritika finished with 6.5 points from eight rounds and her excellent show helped her to be picked for National Under-13 Girl Chess Championship.

In the tournament, Vritika defeated ACM Shahana, Krishnan, AFM Hiranmayee Kulkarni, Divyanshi, Khandelwal, Swadha Datir, Prisha Kesarwani and Nihira Kaul. In the last round, she drew with AFM Mysha Perwer from Mumbai giving a tough fight. First four players from the final standing got six and half points each. Vritika got fourth place when tie-break rule was applied and was selected for the national meet.

National chess championship will be held at Durgapur in West Bengal from December 14-23. This will be Vritika’s eighth national in different age groups. Vritika also improved her International Rating points and crossed 1750 ELO rating points.

A student of Somalwar School Maa Umiya Branch, Vritika trains under coach Nilesh Channawar at Brilliant Chess Academy Nagpur. She thanked the school, parents and coach for supporting her.
