Nagpur: Heavy rainfall on July 20 wreaked havoc in the city, disrupting daily life as water overflowed from numerous places, including the Yashwant Stadium area. The absence of a safety barrier for drains at the stadium has left local residents fearful. Authorities have been criticized for their oversight.
The torrential rain caused the unprotected drain to overflow, leading to significant challenges for residents living nearby. With parts of the drain left exposed, questions are being raised about accountability for any mishaps that may occur.
Neglect of Drain Safety in Heavy Rains:
Last year’s rains had already washed away the safety barriers of this drain, which were never restored despite months passing. Although the administration had materials ready for repairs, no action was taken promptly. Even the tin sheets placed there washed away during Saturday’s heavy rains, further exacerbating the situation.
Water Seeping into Homes:
Last year’s heavy rains had caused severe damage by flooding many homes due to overflowing drains. This Saturday, the drain in question overflowed, spilling onto the streets and into homes, causing considerable distress to locals.
Risk to Commuters:
The drain adjacent to Yashwant Stadium not only affects nearby residences but also poses risks to commuters passing by. Cyclists, pedestrians, and even motorists are navigating the area, unaware of the potential hazards due to the exposed drain.
As the community faces these challenges, the pertinent question remains: in the event of an accident due to the exposed drain, who will be held accountable?
