Nagpur/Umred : A tragic incident occurred in Umred, Nagpur district, during a Ganesh immersion procession on Thursday, leaving eleven women injured. The incident unfolded amidst the celebratory atmosphere of the Ganesh festival, which is celebrated with great enthusiasm across the state.
On Tuesday, devotees bid farewell to Lord Ganesha, but the festivities took a dark turn during the immersion procession on Thursday night. As the procession progressed with the rhythmic beats of drums, some individuals were setting off firecrackers. One aerial bomb exploded prematurely at ground level, causing a significant blast that resulted in injuries to the women present in the crowd.
The incident took place around 9 PM near the Shrikrishna Temple on Itwari Road, where members of the Shiv Sneh Mandal were leading the immersion procession. Reports indicate that the aerial bomb detonated from an ongoing construction site, sending shrapnel into the densely packed crowd. Many bystanders, including several young men and women from the drum troupe, were caught in the chaos as the explosion sent sparks flying.
Emergency services quickly transported the injured women to hospitals, with seven admitted to the Government Medical Hospital in Nagpur and four taken to the Umred Government Hospital for treatment. Some of the women suffered severe facial burns.
The unexpected explosion caused widespread panic among the attendees, leaving the community in shock. Local authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, aiming to prevent such occurrences in future celebrations.
