New Criminal Laws Enforced in Nagpur, First Case Registered Under BNS

Nagpur:Starting today July 1, three new criminal laws have come into effect across the country, promising to bring significant changes to India’s criminal justice system. The police administration in Nagpur has geared up for the implementation of these new laws, with the first case registered under the Indian Justice Code (BNS) at the city’s Wathoda police station.

A serious accident case has been filed under sections 281 and 125(b) of the BNS at Wathoda police station. The incident, recorded as case number 384/24, involved a pedestrian being hit by a speeding Tata Ace vehicle while walking along Symbiosis College Road in Pawanputra Nagar. The victim, who sustained severe injuries, is currently undergoing treatment. The accused driver has been identified as Murtuza Bashir Ahmed Ansari, aged 35, from Bilal Nagar, Kalamna. Based on the victim’s complaint, Wathoda police have registered the case and initiated further investigation.

Similarly, MIDC police station has also registered a case under the new laws. The first accidental death has been recorded under section 194 of the Indian Civil Protection Code (BNSS). The incident occurred in Ward No. 8, near Dattamandir, Wanadongri, where Charan Uddhavrao Sakhale, aged 61, suffered a fatal electric shock while filling water in a cooler. He was declared dead upon arrival at Shalinitai Meghe Hospital, and the police have registered the case and started an investigation.

At Ajni police station, another case under the new laws has been registered following the accidental death of a one-year-old girl due to electric shock near Lohara Samaj Bhavan. The police have filed the case under section 194 of the Indian Civil Protection Code.

The Nagpur police headquarters has provided officers with handbooks to facilitate the transition from old laws to the new ones. Additionally, a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has been issued, detailing the handling of various crimes, including those against women and children, property crimes, economic offenses, organized crimes, terrorist activities, and accidents.

The Indian Justice Code (BNS) 2023, the Indian Civil Protection Code (BNSS) 2023, and the Indian Evidence Act (BSA) 2023 have replaced the British-era Indian Penal Code (IPC), Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), and Indian Evidence Act, respectively.
