Nagpur: In a significant stride towards urban development, the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) has granted approval for a series of ambitious projects collectively worth Rs 450 crore, aimed at enhancing Nagpur’s infrastructure and cultural offerings. Among the greenlit ventures is a long-awaited cancer hospital, a captivating theme park dedicated to the life of Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji, and further expansions of the Koradi temple complex.

The most notable among these projects is the cancer hospital slated to be established at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Initially conceived over a decade ago in 2012 during Devendra Fadnavis’s tenure as Leader of Opposition, the project had faced numerous obstacles, including financial constraints. With these impediments now overcome, the project has received the green light, setting the stage for the commencement of construction. Representing a significant milestone, this hospital will be the region’s first government-affiliated cancer treatment center, with an estimated cost of Rs 75 crore.

Addressing the need for cultural enrichment, the NIT has approved plans for a thematic park dedicated to the legendary Maratha leader, Chhatrapati Shivaji. Named “Shivshrusthi,” this park draws inspiration from a similar establishment in Pune. The park will intricately portray pivotal events from Shivaji’s life, showcasing replicas of 14 forts and murals depicting his legendary battles. Notable associates such as Tanaji Malusare and Bajiprabhu Deshpande will also be featured in the park’s narrative. The project has received initial approval, with a proposed budget of Rs 150 crore, and is poised to capture the essence of Shivaji’s legacy.

Another significant development lies in the expansion of the Koradi temple complex. With an earmarked budget of Rs 225 crore, the project’s third and fourth phases encompass the creation of decorative gates, an amusement park, lush green plantations, diverse gardens, and even replicas of renowned temples from across the nation. Additionally, provisions for essential amenities such as parking facilities and waiting areas are encompassed in the scope of the project.

Further innovations include advancements in the Futala Fountain Project, which encountered setbacks due to algae growth. Addressing this concern, the NIT collaborated with IIT Mumbai to devise specialized pipes, which are scheduled to be installed this month for rigorous testing. Should the solution prove successful during the trial period, the fountain project may soon regain momentum.

Meanwhile, the script for the Swami Vivekanand light and music show has also been approved. For the Futala Fountain Project, IIT Mumbai has suggested use of specialized pipes. These would be installed this month and tested for over a fortnight. If successful, the fountain may be started soon.
