Patna: On Monday, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar won a motion of confidence for his coalition government with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Bihar Assembly. Nitish Kumar’s coalition government won after 129 MLAs supported the resolution. Soon after the announcement of the result, the Opposition walked out from the State Assembly.
BJP MLA Nandkishore Yadav moved a motion to remove the Bihar Assembly Speaker and RJD leader Awadh Bihari Choudhary from the State Assembly. Following this Awadh Bihari Chaudhary was removed as Bihar Assembly Speaker.
Bihar Governor Rajendra Arlekar on Monday asserted that the rule of law was the “top priority” of the Nitish Kumar Government in the state. “Rule of law prevails in the state…..that is the top priority of the government. To improve law and order strength of (police) force has been increased”, said Arlekar.
The need for a trust vote arose after Nitish Kumar resigned as CM and dumped the Congress-led Mahagathbandhan alliance. As he took oath as the Chief Minister of Bihar for the ninth-time after joining hands with the BJP-led NDA alliance, he required a trust vote in the Assembly.
According to media reports, Nitish Kumar reportedly went into a sulk after not being named the convenor of INDIA, the Opposition bloc that took shape through his efforts. He resigned as chief minister on January 28.
The JD(U) has 45 MLAs in the 243-membered Bihar Assembly, whereas, the BJP and Hindustani Awam Morcha-Secular (HAM-S), have 79 and four legislators respectively. The NDA has the support of 128 MLAs and the majority mark is 122.
The ruling Janata Dal (United) in Bihar faced concern as three of its MLAs once again missed the crucial legislators’ meeting held in Patna on Sunday evening. This absence followed six MLAs skipping the previous luncheon meeting at Minister Shravan Kumar’s residence on Saturday. Among the absent JD(U) MLAs were Rupauli MLA and former minister Bima Bharti, Sursand MLA Dilip Ray (formerly with the Rashtriya Janata Dal), and Barbigha MLA Sudarshan Kumar.
The JD(U) relocated its MLAs to a hotel near the Assembly. With 45 MLAs, JD(U) holds a significant position in the 243-member Bihar Assembly, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has 79 MLAs. Additionally, the alliance partner Hindustani Awam Morcha-Secular (HAM-S) contributes four MLAs, and with the support of one independent, the NDA comprises 128 MLAs against the Grand Alliance’s (GA) 115. To reach the majority mark, an alliance required 122 MLAs.
The RJD faced a setback within the Bihar Assembly as three of its members were observed seated among the ruling party benches. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav raised a point of order, expressing concern over party MLAs Chetan Anand, Neelam Devi, and Prahlad Yadav aligning with members of the ruling NDA just before voting on a no-confidence motion against Speaker Awadh Bihari Chaudhary.

JD(U) MLA Gopal Mandal mentioned that the party is in contact with those three MLAs, clarifying that there’s no political game involved.
BJP MLAs were relocated to a resort in Bodh Gaya for a two-day stay and returned to Patna on Sunday evening. The party emphasized that this move was for training purposes and not due to concerns about poaching.
RJD MLAs have been staying at Tejaswi’s residence since Saturday afternoon. Social media videos depicted them enjoying music and a bonfire. Additionally, on Sunday, Congress MLAs, who had been in Hyderabad, also arrived at Tejaswi’s residence.
