NMC boss calls for collaborative action among Govt organizations to tackle air pollution

Nagpur: “Active coordination between different Government organisations is needed to reduce the impact of air pollution in Nagpur,” said Dr Abhijit Chaudhari, Municipal Commissioner here on Friday. Dr Chaudhari made this statement during a review meeting of air pollution status in the city at NMC office in Civil Lines.

In the meeting, Ravindra Bhelawe, Deputy Commissioner; Manoj Talewar, Superintending Engineer; Dr Shweta Banerjee, Superintending Engineer; Jayesh Bhandarkar, ACP ( Traffic); Ravindra Pagey, Administrative Officer, Transport Department; Dr Sangeeta Goyal, Principal Scientist, CSIR-NEERI; Alpana Patne, Executive Engineer; Sandeep Lokhande; Rajendra Patil, MPCB; and Dr Sandeep Narnaore, MPCB were present in the meeting.

To improve the air quality, NMC has commenced many projects in the city and most of them are near completion. To take stock of all the work, Dr Chaudhari conducted the review meeting with concerned departments. The civic body has recently introduced 144 e-busses in the city and already 60 such e-buses are running on city roads. For recharging of these e-buses, NMC has established three charging stations and bus depot at Wadi, Hingna and Lakadganj areas. The work of the fourth bus depot and charging station is underway at Wathoda and it will be completed soon, informed the representative of the transport department of NMC to the Municipal Commissioner.

NMC is also developing green patches in the city and one green patch has already been established at Bharat Mata Garden. The civic body planted saplings and maintained them at RTM Nagpur University campus. Levelling of roads and filling of potholes in different parts of the city is also going on.

To transform city crematoriums into pollution free zones, the civic body initiated development works in many crematoriums of the city. NMC installed air pollution control equipment in Gangabai ghat, Mokshadham, and Manewada ghat which are situated right in the middle residential areas. NMC is also constructing new ghats at Chinchbhuvan, Jaitala and Friends Colony, informed official during the meeting.

To reduce air pollution in the city, NMC is taking help from CSIR NEERI and also adopting new technologies developed by this national institution.
