Nagpur: The Enforcement Department of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Friday demolished one of the largest South-West Nagpur’s vegetable, chicken, fish and mutton markets in Khamla to sell the land to pave way for a commercial complex under London/Orange City Street Project, which is pending for the last 15 years.
Prior to that the anti-encroachment squad once again carried out a drive in the Jaitala area to clear the approach road to Renuka Gruha Nirman Sanstha. A24-metre road in front of the housing society was encroached upon and during last month, the Enforcement Department had uprooted the semi pucca construction and the zhuggis.
NMC’s Laxmi Nagar Zone had on Thursday issued notices to all vegetable, chicken, fish and mutton shop owners directing them to remove their set up within 24 hours. Fearing loss and action, the vendors removed their setups and material through the night and early morning.
Lot of drama was reported as the vendors’ union has alleged that the civic body also removed vegetable stalls though the area along the road was notified as a hawking zone six years ago.
According to media reports, the NMC also removed vegetable and fruit stalls that were operating on two roads along the land earmarked for the project. The ‘eviction drive’ led to serious inconvenience to hundreds of people from South-West Nagpur.
Metro Mall project is being developed on Plot No. 1 adjacent to Jaiprakash Nagar Metro Station. The civic body is yet to prepare, plan and float EoI for Plot Nos. 2, 3 and 4. Also, the civic body has been sitting pretty on the project for the last 15 years. In the meanwhile, garbage operator AG Enviro Infra Projects Pvt Ltd, scrap dealers and a few contractors have reportedly encroached two large parts of the project land.
The NMC team moved to Orange City Street and removed about15 zhuggis that had come on the NMC land. Since long the encroachers were putting-up on the said strip of land. Recently, NMC had notified the said part of land for commercial development and today’s action is seen against this backdrop. The NMC’s team also evicted scrap dealers. Nearly three truck loads of material from scrap dealers were seized during the drive. About 15 sheds and 25 zhuggis were removed during the anti-encroachment drive.
The illegal meat market that was mushrooming at Khamla was also cleared of the encroachment. The anti-encroachment drive was carried out by team comprising Purshottam Pande, Shailesh Jambhulkar, Bhaskar Malve, all Junior Engineers, Gopal Navghare, Establishment Engineer and others under guidance of Ashok Patil, Deputy Commissioner, Enforcement Department, Kiran Bagade, Assistant Commissioner, Laxminagar Zone, Anand Lamsonge, Deputy Engineer, and Sanjay Kamble, Enforcement Inspector.
