Nagpur: Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) cracked a whip against a doctor who was found dumping hazardous bio-medical waste in NMC dustbins instead of disposing it separately at a safer place. The doctor was warned and fined with Rs 50,000 for violating the norms.
According to NMC, a team of Health Department had carried out a surprise visit to the OPD Clinic of Dr Sanjiv S Chauhan, situated near New Indora Barakholi area in Jaripatka, recently. The team found Dr Chauhan dumping the hazardous bio-medical waste in NMC dustbins at public places.
The responsibility of disposing of bio-medical waste lies with individual medical practitioner. NMC has made arrangements for destroying the bio-medical waste at its Bhandewadi Plant through Superb Hygienic firm. Even then, Dr Sanjiv Chauhan was dumping the bio-medical waste at NMC’s common dustbins at residential places and thus violating the laid down norms. Subsequently, the team of Health Department has issued a warning and slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on Dr Chauhan. If Dr Chauhan fails to pay the fine, the matter will be forwarded to Maharashtra Pollution Control Board for necessary legal action.
The action was initiated by Health Department’s Dr Sunil Ghurde, Dr Vijay Joshi, Mukund Khuje under the guidance of Deputy Director (Health) Dr Milind Ganvir and Health Officer (Medical) Dr Savita Meshram.
