Nagpur: On one hand, citizens of Nagpur are quite pleased with the development of the city for the two-day C20 summit, but on the other hand the beautification at some prominent places seem to degrade the citizens.
Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday unveiled the much-awaited covered statues at Walkers street (Ramgiri). The sculptures erected are based on ‘various kinds of people spotted on Walkers street.’ While there are sculptures of ‘mobile wale’, ‘the pet lover’, ‘glamour girl’, ‘still young’, ‘the morning person’, the one sculpture which caught everyone’s attention was the ‘chidimar jodi’.
The sculpture– of two boys erected in one of the most peaceful areas of the city has gained a lot of criticism from the regular walkers and citizens. ‘Chidimar’ is considered to be a demeaning term in Nagpur’s slang– meaning eve-teasing or who stares at other people.
Netizens, too, were not pleased with Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s decision to name this sculpture. “They actually immortalised Chidimar jodi (basically creeps who catcall women) in statue form at one of the best, most peaceful places in Nagpur,” a netizen commented.
