The funds will be utilised for road repairs, wall paintings, murals, lane and traffic signage, beautification of traffic islands and greenery on dividers in the city
Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has received Rs 49.77 crore from the Maharashtra Government for the G20 Council meeting scheduled to be held in Nagpur in March next year. The funds will be utilised for road repairs, wall paintings, murals, lane and traffic signage, beautification of traffic islands and greenery on dividers, a report in local media said.
Municipal Commissioner Radhakrishnan B the other day conducted a joint inspection with representatives of NHAI, NMRDA, Maha Metro among others at the venues where G20 Council delegates are supposed to visit. As per the tentative plan, NMC will focus on improving amenities at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, road leading to Le Meridien Hotel — the venue of G20 Council, Zero Mile, Deekshabhoomi and Futala Lake.
Apart from NHAI and Maha Metro, the civic chief has also asked Maharashtra Airport Development Company Limited (MADC) to ensure beautification of its premises as the delegates will first land at Nagpur Airport.
As Wardha road will be utilised more by the delegates, Radhakrishnan has asked senior NHAI officials to ensure pothole-free roads. He also asked NMC’s Traffic Department to ensure lane marking and traffic signages en route to all the venues. NMC has begun work at a brisk pace on areas that need immediate attention in terms of retrofitting, beautification and traffic management. Apart from State Government’s financial assistance, the NMC will also provide Rs 30 crore from its kitty for the meeting, the report said.
According to a senior official, though the State Government has fulfilled the civic body’s 100% fund requirement, the NMC may approach the government for additional funds. The official pointed out that Mumbai and Pune, the other two cities in the state holding G20 Council meetings, are spending Rs 1,600 crore and Rs 600 crore respectively.
“Keeping in mind that the face of the city should be changed during the meeting of the G20 council by emphasizing the repair of roads, beautification of squares, and lighting, and this should be used for branding Nagpur in the world, a team of NMC officials will visit Pune and Mumbai to study their branding plans for their respective cities,” said the official.
