Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) started the annual campaign to clean the Nagpur rivers from the first day of the new year. Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Abhijit Chaudhary had directed the civic officials to clean rivers from January 1. The campaign to clean Nag River started from Ambazari Ghat.
Till last year, the river cleaning works would begin in April and continue till late June. However, the devastating floods of September 23 last year have alerted the municipal administration which does not want to take any chances this monsoon.
The decision to advance the cleaning process was taken by civic body bosses as this year, scope of work is quite wide or otherwise the exercise is taken during the summer time. Apart from lifting the garbage and cleaning the banks, it is decided to deepen the bed of the Nag River so that it can hold a large amount of water. This is being done so as to avoid any repeat of flash floods that occurred on September 23 after the city received over 100 mm rains within a short span of four to five hours.
Every year, NMC conducts a river cleaning campaign and 17.75 km length of Nag River in the city limits, 17 km of Pili River and 12 km of Pohra river will be thoroughly cleaned. The overgrown trees on the banks of these rivers might also be cut down after taking into account its necessity and depending upon soil stability.
Rajiv Gaikwad, Chief Engineer, Public Works Department (PWD), NMC, also instructed the Engineering Department officials to take special care to ensure after the silt is removed from the river during river cleaning, the soil should not remain as it is on the banks. The soil removed from the river is going to be utilised for planting trees and due to deepening post removal of silt, the flow of water in the river will increase and drains would not be obstructed.
