An agreement was signed with a special company for the construction of brick, sand, paver blocks from the rubble coming out of the dilapidated buildings in the city
Nagpur: The much-touted project for recycling of construction debris for manufacture of sand, bricks, paver blocks, tiles etc seems to be in cold storage.
An agreement was signed with a special company for the construction of brick, sand, paver blocks from the rubble coming out of the dilapidated buildings in the city. But for the past two months nothing has been done and the project seems to be in limbo. In March 2022, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) had signed an agreement for recycling of construction and demolition (C&D) waste generated in the city. The pact was signed with M/s Hyderabad C&D Waste Pvt. Ltd operating under the name of M/s Ramky Enviro Engineer Ltd for recycling of waste generated at construction sites as redevelopment of old properties is on rise.
During construction work in the city, there is often a large amount of debris generated. Apart from this, due to demolition of dilapidated houses/buildings and demolition of illegal constructions by the NMC, huge amounts of debris comes out. The civic body was struggling with this waste for years.
Under the agreement, the city will have facilities to dispose of demolished buildings as well as new construction debris. The company will not only make sand but also bricks, paver blocks and tiles from this waste. Till now sand used to come only from the river, that’s all everyone knew.
The waste generated daily in the city will be processed and sand will also be made from it. This newly made sand will be available to the citizens at reasonable rates. As per the agreement, the said company will process about 200 tonnes of construction and demolition (C&D) waste per day.
The company will provide complete infrastructure to collect ‘C&D’ waste from the city. This is only the second project of this type in Maharashtra to be used in Nagpur. This project will completely reduce the ‘C&D’ waste on roads, open spaces, and residential areas in the city. This will also help in making Nagpur city smart and clean.
It is noteworthy that the work on the project has slowed down since the agreement was reached in March. It is feared that the agreement should not remain a mere formality. Earlier, a contract was signed for a waste-to-energy project in the city. The State Government had also provided funds for the project. But now this project has been bundled out. Doubts are being expressed whether the same situation is going to happen for the sand, brick and paver block construction project from rubble?
