Nagpur: The District Administration in order to ensure hassle-free Gram Panchayat elections had sent letters to almost all government departments and requisitioned a fleet of official vehicles for transportation of men, material and other works during the polls. However, many departments displayed their negative attitude leaving the district administration furious and forcing it to launch “vehicle seizure” drive from Friday. The red-faced administration directed the police department to ‘seize’ the designated vehicles of government departments. Acting on the diktat, a team of cops reached the Great Nag Road-based workshop of Nagpur Municipal Corporation and took seven designated vehicles in their possession to be pressed into service of district administration for Gram Panchayat polls.
The elections to dozens of Gram Panchayats in Nagpur district are slated to be held on October 16. The district administration will need hundreds of vehicles to transport the poll staff and poll material to rural parts of the district where elections are being held. Hence the district administration requisitioned official vehicles from a number of government departments to utilise them in poll-bound Gram Panchayats for various works. The fuel expenditure and perks of drivers is borne by the district authorities.
However, as the district administration found the concerned government departments wanting and failed to make their vehicles available in the service of the poll authorities, they cracked a whip and ordered seizure of NMC vehicles. Subsequently, a team of cops reached the NMC workshop on Great Nag Road and took seven designated vehicles in their possession. According to cops, the district administration will decide whether to release the ‘seized’ vehicles or not.
