Nagpur: Following the painstaking investigations that stretched for nearly a decade, Pachpaoli police have finally booked the unnamed Record Keepers of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) in connection with missing records pertaining to property tax.
Assistant Superintendent Anil Karhade lodged the FIR against record keepers of Ashi Nagar Zone. The matter started after Shankar Gulani sought information under RTI about some properties in the Nara/Nari area. He had smelled a rat in the Property Tax Department and wanted to uncover the alleged manipulation of records on part of some unscrupulous elements in the Property Tax Department.
The RTI activist had been pursuing the matter since 2013 when he first filed the RTI application. Karhade finally was forced to admit that records relating to properties are missing from the record room of NMC. Earlier property tax records were kept in a centralised facility at Mahal office of NMC in Gandhibagh Zone. After the formation of Zones, the property tax record was transferred to respective Zonal offices.
The record sought by Gulani pertained to Ward No. 57 House No. 3919/E/823B, House No. 3445/A/B/87 and House No. 2431. The RTI application was made in 2013 and since then the same was pending as NMC officials tried to stall providing information as the same would have exposed their misdeeds. Gulani went to appeal to the Assistant Commissioner but here too information was not disclosed. He then filed an appeal before the State Information Commissioner who had given definite directions quite long back.
As nothing moved, Gulani again preferred a second appeal and this time the State Information Commissioner placed an onus on the Commissioner of Police and Municipal Commissioner to furnish information and investigate the matter.
