Nagpur: Farmers in Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region are facing a significant crisis as orange exports to Bangladesh have been severely affected due to the ongoing turmoil in the neighboring country. The Nagpur area, known for its abundant orange production, usually exports around 250,000 tons of oranges to Bangladesh each season. However, the current instability in Bangladesh has brought these exports to a halt, leaving the farmers in distress. The pressing question now is: What will happen to the 250,000 tons of oranges meant for export?
No Buyers for Vidarbha Oranges
Farmers, traders, and exporters in Vidarbha are deeply concerned about the situation in Bangladesh. Despite Bangladesh imposing heavy import duties on Indian oranges in recent years, the demand for Vidarbha oranges remained strong. Farmers in the region had invested heavily in producing high-quality, export-worthy oranges, but now, due to the instability, no Bangladeshi trader is willing to purchase these oranges from Vidarbha.
Farmers Urge Central Government to Help Find New Markets
Local traders are also reluctant to export oranges to Bangladesh this year, raising concerns among farmers about the fate of millions of tons of oranges produced in Vidarbha. With the orange harvest still a month or two away, the situation remains tense. The harvest season is expected to begin in October, with promising yields anticipated. Farmers, traders, and exporters are now urging the central government to intervene and help them find new markets for their produce.
