Nagpur: The Nagpur police found themselves helpless as they are groping in dark in cracking the nine-year-old’s rape case at Pardi locality of the city. This case has kept multiple investigation squads on their toes for the last three days. What started as a blind case for the cops, with almost no clues to work upon, is still a mystery for the cops with the investigation teams yet to stumble upon something concrete, a report in a local English daily said.

According to the report, the cops have even released a sketch of the suspect, but to no avail. The girl, raped in front of her five-year-old sister, had started shouting as the unidentified perpetrator was trying to force himself upon her when the sisters were alone at home on Sunday, September 15. The matter came to fore when the parents returned home and the bleeding girl confided in her mother about her plight. She was taken to Pardi police station first and subsequently to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for medical check-up.

Apart from Pardi police, Crime Branch teams too have fanned out in all directions to probe the matter. The cops so far have shown several images of various suspects to the survivor for clues. Cops tried to collect CCTV footage from some key locations, from which the bike-borne suspect with a ‘tilak’ on the forehead had likely passed. The cops encountered disappointment when the footage at one of the key locations was found impeded by a parked vehicle. The vehicle had blocked the CCTV camera’s crucial angle which would have otherwise nearly captured the suspect’s bike and its registration number.

The report further said that cops had quizzed several friends, co-workers, and relatives of the survivor’s parents, who earned their livelihood as labourers, for clues. The accused had inquired about one ‘Ashok’ with the neighbours before heading towards the rented apartment of the survivors. Speaking in Marathi, the accused is learnt to have spoken to the survivor and inquired about some of her father’s friends before taking her inside and forcing himself upon her.

The cops, based on the testimony of the survivor, quizzed several friends and acquaintances of the couple, especially focussing on anyone named ‘Ashok’. Despite the efforts, the cops have remained empty-handed so far. Police have shown many images and footage to the girl but she is yet to confirm any one of them. Efforts are also underway to ensure each CCTV footage is checked, and human intelligence has been activated at the local liquor dens and places likely to be visited by the suspect, the report said.

The cops are also checking jail releases and habitual offenders of women-related crimes in the locality and in the nearby police stations to rule out their involvement.
