Nagpur: Starting today, the Nagpur city police are launching a special campaign to combat the pressing issue of excessive honking on city roads. This initiative aims to raise awareness and enforce strict penalties for violators.

Campaign Details and Objectives

Commissioner of Police Dr. Ravinder Singal highlighted the significant nuisance caused by constant vehicle horn honking, attributing it to increased stress levels and heightened noise pollution on Nagpur’s busy streets. Dr. Singal emphasized the importance of adhering to noise level guidelines established by the Supreme Court, which set the limits at 45 decibels for residential areas and 55 decibels for commercial zones. However, rampant honking has led to noise levels frequently exceeding these limits.

Phase One: Awareness and Prevention

The first phase of the campaign will see senior police officials stationed at key locations across the city starting Monday. They will encourage citizens to refrain from unnecessary honking, especially in sensitive areas such as hospitals and schools. “The incessant use of horns, especially in sensitive areas, is a matter of concern,” stated Dr. Singal, stressing the importance of fostering responsible behavior among vehicle users.

Phase Two: Enforcement and Penalties

In the second phase, the police will take strict action against drivers using unauthorized pressure horns and modified silencers, imposing penalties under Section 119/2 of the Motor Vehicle Act. Dr. Singal warned that loud horns not only disrupt tranquility but also pose health risks, particularly to vulnerable groups like senior citizens and young children.

Stringent Measures Against DJs

The campaign also includes stringent measures against DJs operating sound systems at events and gatherings. Many DJs have been found violating Supreme Court guidelines by playing excessively loud music at venues such as lawns and wedding halls, posing a threat to public health. The police will seize equipment from DJs found to be in breach of noise regulations.

This comprehensive campaign reflects the city police’s commitment to creating a more harmonious and peaceful urban environment by addressing the root causes of noise pollution.
