Nagpur: The Aurangabad bench of Bombay High Court ordered the police not to disclose rape victims’ identity by disclosing their names and pictures openly. Rather, submit the photos in sealed covers from now on, the bench said.
In a statement, the bench said, “We direct all concerned agencies, who are dealing with the investigation of such crimes, that henceforth the photographs of such victims should be filed in a sealed envelope before the concerned courts.”
In case the agency fails to do so, they may invite action for offence under Section 228-A of IPC. The bench of justices Vibha Kankanwadi and Abhay Waghwase, quoting Supreme Court’s verdicts said that it has been mentioned that the survivor or victim’s identity in such cases like IPC 376 and other sections including POCSO Act should not be disclosed.
The directives came from the High Court while hearing a bail case of farmer Sajjan Gusinge under Atrocities Act.
