Nagpur: In a significant development, Justice Govinda A. Sanap at the High Court has issued notices against the State of Maharashtra, Mantralay, The Commissioner MNREGA and the Dep. CEO Zilla Parishad Gondia, in response to a writ petition filed by the Gram Panchayat Association Gondia District.
Advocate Prakash Naidu, representing the petitioner, highlighted to the court that the MNREGA Act was established by the Government of India to provide wage employment to the rural poor through public works and individual projects. The legislation aimed to improve livelihoods and empower households in rural areas, with a focus on grassroots development led by gram panchayats.
However, the petitioner raised concerns about delays in disbursing funds to gram panchayats for completed projects, totaling approximately 1500 Lacs. Some gram panchayats with political connections were allegedly receiving preferential treatment, bypassing the seniority list and influencing officials to release their funds out of turn.
The petitioner sought relief from the court, requesting an investigation into officials acting unlawfully and imposition of costs on those responsible. The High Court has called upon the respondents to submit their replies within two weeks.
Advocate Prakash Naidu, Joseph Bastian, and Surabhi Naidu Godbole represented the petitioner in the case, raising important issues surrounding MNREGA implementation in Gondia District.
