Nagpur: Tempers ran high in Yavatmal town when the notorious criminal and former Congress Councillor Pravin Diwte was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in his own house on Saturday morning. Pravin Diwte was recently acquitted in Guntha Raut murder case and was gearing up for Nagar Parishad elections. The daylight murder has created ripples among crime circles and also rattled the police. The reason behind the brutal murder has not been ascertained so far.
According to information, a gang of 7-8 unidentified assailants barged into the house of Diwte at about 7.30 in the morning. The attackers first blinded Diwte by throwing chili powder in his eyes and then fired four bullets on his chest. He was also attacked with swords and knives. The critically injured and profusely bleeding Pravin Diwte was rushed to Vasantrao Naik Government Hospital but was pronounced ‘brought dead’ by doctors there.
The news of the brutal murder spread like wild fire across the city and a mob of 4000-5000 youths gathered at the house of Diwte within minutes. Speculations ran wild over the identity of the assassins with police suspecting gang war as the reason behind the murder.

Cops have mounted a massive manhunt to nab the murders.
According to sources, one suspect has been detained and is being interrogated. The deceased Pravin Diwte was a history-sheeter and was facing many offences of serious nature including murder, attempt to murder and extortion. Cops are scanning the footages of CCTV cameras installed at nearby areas.
It is pertinent to recall that Nagpur Today had flashed a report a year ago titled “Yavatmal’s absconding criminal nabbed in Nagpur by Crime Branch” wherein it was stated, ‘In a major breakthrough, Crime Branch of Nagpur Police arrested a hardcore criminal Pravin Dattuji Diwte in city who was absconding from Yavatmal. The criminal was wanted in connection with 5-6 murder cases and other serious crimes. Diwte was absconding since the past few months. In a well-planned operation, the goon was nabbed in front of Parate Sabhagruha on Khamla Road. The movement of the absconding criminal was tipped off by the informants and acting on the tip off, Police Inspectors Anil Katkade, Chandrashekhar Dhole, Girish Tathod, constables Ravi Gawande, Prashant Deshmukh, and others nabbed Pravin Diwte. The hardcore criminal was wanted in Yavatmal for murders, attempt to murder and several other serious crimes. The arrested goon is likely to hand over Yavatmal police soon.’
Pravin Diwate is survived by his wife Usha Diwate, who is the President of Yavatmal’s Women’s Congress and the sitting municipal councillor in Yavatmal.
