Gone are the sad days when you had to go to the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar ‘International airport’ at Nagpur early in the morning to receive some guests and not even find a hot cup of tea in the vicinity of the parking lot to wake you up fully!
Now, the first food outlet has opened in the space between Parking and Departure serving not just tea but snacks like Poha with Tarri, sabudana khichadi, bread pakoda and samosa 7 a.m. onwards. It will be open right till 10 p.m. This outlet belongs to Varhadi That – Nagpur’s favorite Caterer also running one of the first Vidarbha food restaurant by the same name at Dhantoli, opposite Yeshwant stadium.
Some more such outlets are planned but it is fitting that the first one to open its doors should be this one. And not some burger, sandwich or pizza place! This airport can get as international as it wants but you cannot take the flavour of Nagpur away from it. This is what a Varhadi That opening its doors here tells you.
It has become quite popular too. At 10.30 a.m. on Raksha Bandhan day, one could see executives from many Airlines such as Jet, Indigo and even Quatar walking out of the Airport building to the round kiosk to get some mid morning refreshments. Naturally, the poha seemed the most popular; it was almost over. I tried the samosa which was offered smothered in gravy ( rassa) that was hot and spicy, yet did not take away from the crispness of the samosa. This feat can be managed only in Nagpur!
The cup ( plastic glass) of tea was flavoured with the right amount of ginger and wasn’t overtly sweet either. More importantly, it was steaming hot.
Mr. Bhoyar, who is a retiree of the MLA guest house canteen is managing this outlet very efficiently. Varhadi That does the catering at MLA’s since many years – now their presence at the airport that too at quite economical rates, will gladden many Nagpurians’ hearts.
