Nagpur: Despite stringent guidelines and actions taken by the police, pubs and lounges in Nagpur continue to flout regulations openly. The State Excise Department recently exposed these violations during raids at seven pubs in the city, uncovering multiple breaches of the rules.
The State Excise Department, which regularly conducts checks at establishments with liquor permits, conducted a series of raids as part of their ongoing compliance drive. During these inspections, officials discovered several violations, prompting the Department to issue notices to the offending establishments. A senior official from the State Excise Department stated, “The drive will continue, and if repeat offenders are found, we will also submit a report to the Collectorate to take action against them, including imposing fines and cancellation of licenses.”
The official also mentioned that numerous complaints from citizens have been received regarding the misconduct of these pubs and lounges. The establishments have a history of controversial incidents, including fights, brawls, and the molestation of women. Notably, a drunk woman stripped outside a prominent pub on Wardha Road last year, an incident that sparked significant public outrage. Despite such incidents and the consequent public outcry, these venues persist in violating guidelines.
Following the high-profile Pune Porsche incident, Nagpur police renewed their efforts to enforce compliance. Commissioner of Police Ravinder Singal dispatched Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) in plain clothes to monitor these establishments. Their findings revealed blatant violations, including serving alcohol to underage individuals.
In the latest series of actions, the State Excise Department found multiple violations, including breaches of the operational time limit. The State Excise Superintendent (SP) had appointed specialized teams to conduct these checks. These teams also extended their raids to approximately 15 dhabas (roadside eateries) in the city where customers were found being served liquor or allowed to drink on the premises without permits.
Actions were taken not only against dhaba owners but also against patrons. The senior official emphasized the illegality of drinking in places without permits and warned that customers found in violation would also face consequences. “Citizens must understand that drinking in places without a permit is illegal, and they can face action. We are keeping a strict vigil at dhabas and other establishments allowing customers to consume liquor without a permit, and they would face action,” the official added.
The Excise Department’s ongoing efforts highlight their commitment to enforcing liquor regulations in Nagpur. However, the repeated violations by pubs and lounges indicate a persistent challenge in ensuring compliance. The department’s vigilance and the potential for stricter penalties, including license cancellations, underscore the seriousness of these enforcement actions.
Despite significant efforts by both the police and the State Excise Department, Nagpur’s pubs and lounges continue to breach regulations, posing a challenge for authorities. The ongoing raids and enforcement actions aim to curb these violations and uphold the rule of law, with potential severe consequences for repeat offenders.
