Nagpur: A delegation of traders under the banner of Nag Vidarbha Chamber of Commerce (NVCC) recently met Nagpur Commissioner of Police Dr Ravinder Singal and raised some of their concerns.

The delegation under theleadership of President of the chamber Arjundas Ahuja highlighted that the issues of unauthorised hawkers, chain-snatching, growing cases of cyber crime and betting in the city are giving sleepless nights to citizens. The NVCC highlighted that cricket betting is rampant in Nagpur city today, leading many traders to financial ruin, and even causing some young people to commit suicide. They stressed the need for a ban on this betting business.

Vice President Swapnil Ahirkar mentioned that construction work on a culvert is currently underway on the road from Golibar Chowk to Medical College. Gandhibagh is already a busy market area with a very narrow main road. The chowk lacks traffic lights and traffic police, causing significant difficulties for the general public and traders. He requested the installation of traffic lights and the presence of police from Golibar Chowk to the construction site to ease the movement for citizens.

PRO Hemant Sarda reported an increase in chain-snatching incidents in city areas, especially targeting women and the elderly in deserted areas or during the evening, sometimes even endangering lives. He suggested that police patrols be increased in these areas and at night, and an emergency helpline number be issued for all citizens to seek immediate police assistance in such incidents.

Hussain Nurullah Ajani, co-coordinator of the law and order subcommittee, pointed out the growing problem of hawker encroachment in Nagpur city. He explained that customers often find it difficult to enter shops due to the encroachment. Shopkeepers who maintain the cleanliness of the market area and pay all types of taxes suffer heavy financial losses due to hawkers. If shopkeepers ask hawkers not to set up their stalls in front of their shops, they face abuse and sometimes physical assault. Ajani requested the establishment of a designated hawker zone to alleviate this problem.

Member Harmanjeet Singh Baveja observed that illegal alcohol is being served at dhabas and hotels in and around Nagpur city, often without proper licenses. There have even been instances of toxic alcohol being served. He urged the police administration to impose an immediate ban on this practice.

CA Sandeep Jotwani noted that many traders and citizens are falling victim to cybercrime despite being very cautious. Due to the evolving methods of cybercrime, people are frequently defrauded and robbed. He recommended that complaints from victims of cyber fraud and robbery be registered and acted upon promptly by the department and that the police department should raise awareness about cybercrime among traders and the general public.

Police Commissioner Dr. Ravinder Singal attentively listened to the delegation’s problems and suggestions. The delegation requested the reformation of the “Trader Police Friends Committee” under his leadership, allowing the trader community to directly communicate their issues to the police department. The Commissioner agreed, suggesting the nomination of two traders from each police zone in Nagpur to foster collaboration between traders and the police. Additionally, he accepted an invitation to attend the Chamber’s upcoming meeting to discuss matters with the traders.
