Nagpur: The Nag Vidarbha Chamber of Commerce (NVCC), the biggest trade organization of Central India representing various trade associations, has urged the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to extend the due date of Income Tax Return (ITR) till March 31, 2022.
In a letter to the Finance Minister, NVCC President Ashwin Prakash Agrawal (Mehadia); Secretary – Ramawtar Totla; and Convener of Direct Tax Committee of NVCC — CA Sandeep Jotwani highlighted the current market condition and urged to extend the due ITR date in the larger interest of the traders. NVCC highlighted the demand and need of thousands of taxpayers in the current scenario. As the Government is taking a lot of efforts for implementation of new Income Tax Portal, many of the assessees have been facing various teething problems.
“We understand that any such change takes time to stabilize the smooth functioning of the same. Still, many of the technical issues are being faced while filing the ITR due to which there is a strong need for considering the extension of due dates,” NVCC said. The havoc created by the pandemic on account of Covid-19 all around is well-known and well documented and, therefore, hardly requires any elaboration. This extraordinary situation is also a strong reason which should be considered as the assessee needs time to compile the facts and figures in an atmosphere which is very challenging, Mehadia highlighted in the letter to the Finance Minister.
Appreciating the gravity of the situation, NVCC said, in the past the Government had extended various due dates for filing of returns of income, tax audits, etc. “There was an assumption that the situation will ease and we will live with the new normal in the coming time. However, the situation is going worse again with the new challenge in the form of new strain making it more difficult not only to do the business but also for compliance,” NVCC further added.
“In this unprecedented pandemic times, when the people are still struggling to recover, restart and normalise, when the advisory of Governments (be it Central or State Governments) still talk about various precautions and safety protocols to be observed and when various restrictions are still in place, there is strong need that the extension of due dates should be considered,” observed the traders body.
NVCC said that it is the feelings of thousands of the common people (taxpayers and tax professionals) of the country. “We hope that the Government respects and trusts the tax-payers and provides timely, reasonable and much deserved relief,” said Mehadia. The traders body representing more than 13 lakh traders across the Vidarbha region, has been creating awareness amongst the masses on various issues related to taxation laws and its compliances. It has also been working as a connecting medium between the business and the taxation authorities not only for complying with the taxation laws but also for taking to the authorities the various issues being faced by the business from time to time. NVCC has from time to time made various representations to different Government authorities drawing their attention to pressing issues.
