On Day 2, NMC’s NDS collects Rs 1.02 lakh fine from 365 people dumping garbage in public places

Nagpur: On Day 2 of the drive, the Nuisance Detection Squad (NDS) of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) faced resistance from many citizens who were penalized after being caught red-handed while throwing garbage in the open.

To instill a sense of civic discipline among citizens, NMC has undertaken a sustained campaign to penalise those responsible for littering and dumping garbage in public places. On Wednesday, the second day of the drive, the NMC team collected Rs 1 lakh as fine from the errant citizens. During the drive, members of Nuisance Detection Squad found 365 spots wherein people were throwing waste from shops or homes, someone using an open place to urinate, spitting etc.

A total of Rs 1,02,100 was recovered by way of fines by NMC in one single day. About 93 cases pertaining to dumping of waste in public places though there is provision of door-to-door garbage collection and it is working efficiently.

A fine of Rs 37,200 was recovered from the offenders, Rs 400 from each of the persons. A fine of Rs 100 is imposed on a person for dumping waste on a footpath and 137 cases were registered on Wednesday and a fine of Rs13,700 was recovered. Shopkeepers dumping garbage in public places are fined Rs 400. As many as 42 instances were noticed leading to recovery of Rs 16,800.

Similarly, in case of dumping of waste on part of hospitals, labs, clinics the fine is a steep Rs 2,000, and one case was registered on the second day of the drive. Rs 2,000 is also imposed on restaurants, malls, lodges, hotels if found throwing leftovers, garbage on footpath or other public places. Two such violations were noticed. Also, 77 citizens were fined for other violations and Rs13,000 was recovered by the team from 13 organisations for creating hurdles in public places.

At some places, a few former Corporators tried to prevent the NDS from taking action against the offenders. At several places, the nuisance mongers gave excuses of not having money to pay the fine, said reports.

The protest from violators was noticed in almost every zone. As many as 137 citizens, 93 roadside vendors and 42 shopkeepers among others were penalized on Wednesday for littering.

The highest number of people, 77, caught throwing garbage was under Mangalwari Zone. The NDS collected a Rs 17,000 fine from them. It was followed by the Dhantoli zone where NDS caught 71 people for littering who then were made to cough up Rs 17,600 as fine. In Gandhibagh zone, 36 citizens, including shopkeepers, were caught littering, who ended up paying Rs 17,300 fine.
