Nagpur: To ensure safety of train operations during winter and to assist loco pilots when signal visibility is poor, Central Railway (CR) has initiated the utilisation of the fog safety device. This innovative technology serves as a crucial aid, significantly reducing risks associated with low visibility conditions.

The device operates on GPS technology, providing advance notification to loco pilots about upcoming signals via audio-visual indications. The device not only calls out and displays the description of the next signal, but also indicates the intermediate distance between the locomotive and signal, ensuring better preparedness for upcoming changes.

Additionally, all signals and level-crossing gates across various crew routes have been meticulously mapped through GPS locations and programmed into the device, ensuring comprehensive coverage. Moreover, by announcing signal names 500 metres before their actual location, loco pilots are prompted to be more vigilant and better equipped to handle their trains safely.

As per the CR, the device gives special emphasis to critical signals located on the right hand side ensuring heightened attention and safety measures. During instances of low visibility caused by fog, train speeds typically range between 30-60 kmph. However, implementation of the fog safety device allows for a maximum speed of up to 75 kmph, thereby minimising train detention periods and enhancing timely arrivals and departures.

In Mumbai Division, 10 fog safety devices have been procured for now, while more devices will be procured to strengthen safety measures and operational efficiency across the railway network, the CR stated on Sunday.
