Nagpur: One more tiger was found dead on Tuesday in the Bhandara forest division under Nagpur Circle. With this, the tiger toll in Maharashtra in the last nine days has mounted to five.
Bhandara Deputy Conservator of Forests (DyCF) Rahul Gavai said, “On Monday evening, a decomposed carcass of the young tiger was found in a reserve forest compartment in Sorna beat under Jamkandri forest range by staff engaged in fire line work.”
Gavai added, “The carcass seems to be 15-20 days old and hence its identity could not be established. It may be a case of territorial fight as several transient tigers use this area to move along the corridor. All the body parts of the animal were intact and hence poaching is ruled out.”
The Sorna forest area is used as an illegal grazing ground for locals. There is a possibility that the tiger was killed due to poisoning after preying on cattle.
