Ongoing Budget Session is right time to announce loan waiver to farmers: Vikhe-Patil

Nagpur/Mumbai: With the Budget Session of the Maharashtra Legislature resuming on Wednesday after a four-day Holi break, Opposition Congress has said that it will aggressively pursue its demand for a loan waiver to farmers.

Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil said the right time to announce a loan waiver was the ongoing Budget Session. He was responding to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s remarks that his government was not against loan waiver but would do so at the right time.

“A meeting of Congress-NCP leaders will take place on Wednesday morning, before the start of the session, to work out an aggressive floor management strategy,” said Vikhe-Patil. He said assurances of the Fadnavis Government that it was taking steps to stop farmer suicides are far from being true.

“The fact that the Government has not been able to stop farmer suicides in the last two years is a proof that all its claims have failed. In the last two years, nearly 9,000 farmers have committed suicide. The Government should not buy time to provide relief to the farmers,” said the Leader of Opposition.

“If the Government is sincere about welfare of farmers, announcing loan waiver in the Budget Session is the right time. If the Government has the will, it can make provision for relief in terms of loan waiver in the Budget which will be presented the next Saturday (March 18),” said Vikhe-Patil.
