Online payment of power bills becomes a hit among Nagpur consumers

Nagpur: This July, electricity bills worth Rs 216.07 crore were paid online in Nagpur Zone. State power distribution agency Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) said a total of 5,95,173 consumers paid their bills online. Nagpur Zone comprises Nagpur and Wardha districts.

Highlighting the rising trend of online bill payments, the agency said that consumers prefer to avail discounts and save time. “When consumers pay electricity bills through net banking, digital wallet, cash card, debit card and UPI method (except credit card) they get 0.25% discount up to a limit of Rs 500,” the agency said in a press release.

Apart from this, MSEDCL is also encouraging citizens to avail the ‘Go-Green’ scheme of paperless bills, under which consumers will get power bills through e-mail and they can save Rs 120 annually. “The benefit of paperless bills is that consumers will receive it as soon as it is generated. As per our scheme, consumers will get a discount of 1% if the bill is paid within a week of its generation,” an official said.

As per a recent order of the Electricity Regulatory Commission, MSEDCL has imposed a maximum limit on cash payments of electricity bills from August 1. “All consumers of Mahavitaran (except the small pressure agricultural category) can pay electricity bills of maximum up to Rs 5,000 per month in cash,” the release added.

Currently, around 110 lakh consumers (65%) are taking advantage of online facility, from which MSEDCL collects about ₹2,250 crore revenue every month. “Users can pay their bills online through some payment applications as well as the website www.mahadiscom.in or through MSEDCL’s mobile application,” the agency stated.
