Nagpur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal through ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme, regarding rejuvenation of water sources in the country by way of creating ‘Amrit Sarovar’, got off to a start from Nagpur district on Saturday.
Bhoomipujan of four ‘Amrut Sarovars’ was performed at village Mendhepathar in Katol Tehsil of the district. Sunil Kedar, Animal Husbandry Minister and BJP MLC Chandrashekhar Bawankule performed bhoomipujan of the ‘Amrut Sarovar’ on Saturday. National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) will be creating these tanks in places of irrigation ponds.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari was slated to attend the ceremony but he took ill while leaving home. Many other dignitaries, including Opposition Leader Devendra Fadnavis, Guardian Minister Nitin Raut, MPs Krupal Tumane and Vikas Mahatme, MLA Sameer Meghe and MLCs Nago Ganar, Pravin Datke and Abhijit Wanjari also skipped the event.
These proposed ‘Amrut Sarovars’ include Mendhepathar, Sonkhamb, and two irrigation ponds at Chandrabhaga dam. Once created, these tanks will add to the irrigation potential. Besides, the silt and earth removed for deepening of the ponds will be used in four-laning of National Highway 353J for Nagpur-Katol road project. The proposed ‘Amrut Sarovar’ will have several benefits including groundwater recharge, fish conservation, agriculture, and plantation.
Addressing the gathering, Kedar said that creation of ‘Amrut Sarovar’ would be of immense help to the farmers as well as other segments of the area. Also, it will help in the creation of water stock, he added. Bawankule said that under the ‘Amrut Sarovar’ initiative, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had proposed to create 75 tanks in each district to mark ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ (75 years of India’s Independence).
Lauding Gadkari for his efforts to start initiatives like Amrit Sarovar in Nagpur district, Kedar said water conservation was the need of the hour. He said he was having an extremely packed day but just because Gadkari had invited him, he made a point to visit the venue.
Kedar asked the NHAI officials to pay attention to rural roads damaged due to plying of heavy vehicles to carry gravel for road construction. “Gadkari is making best efforts to develop facilities for the citizens and we must support his endeavours cutting across party lines,” he said.
