Nagpur : CRIME Branch Unit-IV apprehended a 21-year-old youth for drug peddling in the Nandanvan area early Monday morning. The accused, Shaikh Shahbaz alias Turani Shaikh Salim, a resident of Lane No 2, Hasanbag, near Kabrastan, was found in possession of over 22 grams of mephedrone, along with a mobile phone and an electronic weighing scale.
The seized mephedrone is valued at Rs 2.22 lakh, while the mobile phone and weighing scale are collectively worth Rs 16,200. The arrest occurred during routine patrolling by the Unit-IV team in Nandanvan, where Shahbaz was detained on suspicion. Initially, he attempted to mislead the police with false information, but a thorough search revealed the mephedrone powder in his pocket.
During interrogation, Shaikh Shahbaz confessed to being involved in the illegal trade of procuring and selling mephedrone, implicating an accomplice identified as Asu Bailis, who is currently on the run.
The Unit-IV team promptly confiscated the contraband from Shahbaz and handed him over to the Nandanvan Police, who registered a case under Sections 8(c) and 22(b) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The arrest and seizure were executed by PI Suhas Choudhary, PSI Vaibhav Barange, and a team of constables, including Shaikh Nazir, Yuvnand Kadu, Satish Thakre, Purshottam Jagnade, Purshottam Kalmegh, and Mahesh Katwale. The operation was conducted under the supervision of Additional CP (Crime) Sanjay Patil, DCP (Detection) Rahul Maknikar, and ACP (Crime) Dr. Abhijeet Patil. The police are currently searching for Shahbaz’s accomplice, Asu Bailis.
