Nagpur: Residents of Saraswati Vihar Colony and Gajanan Nagar in southwest Nagpur are facing increasing harassment from drunken individuals and miscreants openly consuming alcohol on the streets during the day.

Despite the rise in ‘drunk and drive’ incidents across the state, the sight of people purchasing alcohol and water bottles from nearby shops and openly drinking under trees in broad daylight has become a common issue in this area. The locals are expressing their anger over this situation, which they believe persists due to the tacit approval of the police.

This route has effectively become an ‘open bar’ for the drinkers. Residents of Saraswati Vihar are particularly frustrated by the growing number of people parking their vehicles or standing by the road near the main entrance and drinking by the drain. According to the residents, the problem has escalated to the point where some individuals are seen drinking within the vicinity of their homes, making it difficult for women to move about freely in the area.

Women report feeling unsafe while walking on the main road, having to deal with the nuisance of drunkards and miscreants, who often smash bottles on the road. These disturbances are especially problematic in the afternoon and evening when more residents are out and about. The presence of these individuals has become so blatant that they are even seen urinating on the streets, creating an embarrassing and hazardous environment.

Despite the Pratap Nagar Police Station being within a short distance, residents complain that their grievances are being ignored. There is an urgent need for concrete measures and a permanent police presence to curb this issue. Additionally, the area faces several other problems that require immediate attention. Failing to address these issues, the residents have warned of possible protests.

Notably, this constituency falls under the jurisdiction of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
