Question over Vice Chancellor’s PhD sparks controversy; Chaos controls University’s Senate Meeting

Vice-Chancellor of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University Dr. Vilas Sapkal faced the tough time Saturday, even though he was not in the city. Amidsts chaotic scenes in the university’s senate meeting, senior member of the senate Dr. Dinesh Agrawal casted aspersions over the authenticity of Sapkal’s PhD, alleging there was a serious difference in the dates of PhD that Dr. Sapkal had mentioned in his biodata sent to the Chancellor and that registered in his original certificate. He questioned the veracity of Dr. Sapkal’s doctorate asking as to why the date in his PhD’s original certificate and the one he furnished in his biodata did not match. Dr. Agrawal also presented few documents in support of his claim.

Dr. Sapkal could not participate in the meeting as he was was out in Mumbai for an urgent meeting called by the Chancellor K. Shankarnarayanan. Later he rubbished the claims of Dr. Agrawal.

Dr Agrawal said that Dr. Sapkal misguided the Chancellor’s office by furnishing wrong details about his academic period. In his biodata to the Chancellor’s office, Dr. Sapkal has mentioned that he cleared PhD from IIT Powai in the year 1987. Even similar information could be seen posted on the university’s website, he added. On the contrary, the year 1988 is clearly mentioned in the true copy of his PhD certficate issued by IIT Powai. He claimed that Dr. Sapkal had even mentioned this same year in another application sent for the post of Professor in  Chemical Engineering Department of Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University.

In this regard, Dr. Sapkal even received the letter asking him to come up with actual information, however he did not bother to reply, Dr. Agrawal said.
