New Delhi: Modi govt is obsessed with power. It seeks to silence all those who disagree, said Rahul Gandhi at Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting.

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Monday made a scathing attack on the Modi government, saying democracy is going through “one of its darkest hours” with the ruling dispensation “obsessed with power and seeking to silence” all those who disagree.

Presiding over the meeting of the Congress Working Committee in the absence of party chief Sonia Gandhi, the party Vice President charged that, “hiding behind the cloak of national security, civil society is being intimidated for asking questions.”

“Democracy under the present dispensation is going through one of the darkest hours,” he said.

This is the first time that Rahul has presided over the meeting which is being attended by Congress top brass.

46-year-old Rahul was appointed Congress Vice President in January 2013 at Jaipur ‘Chintan Shivir’.

Senior party leaders Manmohan Singh, P Chidambaram, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Janardan Dwivedi, Ahmed Patel, Ambika Soni and A K Antony are among those attending the meet and will decide on the possible deferring of organisational election to next year.

The meeting is significant as the Winter Session of Parliament is starting from 16th of this month and the Congress will finalise its strategy for the session.

The meeting is unlikely to take a decision on elevation of Rahul Gandhi as a section within the party feels that this should be done after the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.

Rahul attacks Modi government

# BJP-ruled States are actively diluting and undermining laws passed by Parliament Land Acquisition Act and the Real Estate Legislation are cases in point.

# The Modi government is lobbying with States via informal channels to deny work under MGNREGA to the very poor.

# In recent months, our jawans have suffered the highest casualties in decades.

# They are being cruelly ‘rewarded’ by a callous government with denial of OROP and cut in disability pensions.

# Democracy under the present dispensation is going through one of the darkest hours.

# Attempts by government to suppress freedom by “abusing” state power will only strengthen our resolve to defeat such dangerous designs.

# TV channels are “punished” and asked to shut down. The opposition is being “arrested” for holding government to account.

# Modi government is obsessed with power, it seeks to silence all those who disagree.

# Attempts by government to suppress fundamental freedoms by abusing State power will only strengthen our resolve to defeat such dangerous designs.

# With State elections due in the coming months we can safely expect the Modi government to launch a campaign of disinformation and polarisation.

# They will exploit caste and religious fault lines. We must anticipate and neutralise such devious strategies.
