The 31st Eye Donation Fortnight programme was inaugurated by MLA (Nagpur South Zone) Sudhakar Kohale. Dean of GMCH Dr. Abhimanyu Niswade, Dr. Ashok Madan along with Medical Superintendent Dr. Jagdish Hedao and Associate Professor Dr Mona Deshmukh were also present on the dais.

The programme was attended by various Heads of Departments from GMCH, Nagpur including, Dr Raj Gajbhiye, Dr. Sajal Mitra, Dr. Shalini Fuse, Dr. Manish Shrigiriwar, Dr. Kumbhalkar, Dr. Tirpude, Dr. Neelam Mishra, Dr. Gorpade, Dr. Diwan, Dr. Motghare, Dr. Bokade and Dr. Laddhad.

Dr. Ashok Madan Sir informed the people that due to the continuous effort taken by the Ophthalmology Department of Government Medical College and Hospital, the number of eye donations and corneal transplants have increased year by year and it is a matter of great pride for us, that the eye donation fortnight began with two corneal transplants being conducted on the very first day itself.

He also thanked the Dean, for his continuous support, extended in the form of new equipments, and two vitreoretinal and one oculoplasty surgeon. This has led to tremendous development of the department, transforming it into one of the best in the state.
Eye Donation Awareness
Dean of GMCH Dr Abhimanyu Niswade, laid stress on the need to educate the people about the importance of eye donation. He further gave assurance to the department about giving every possible help for the further progress of the department, including the provision of a corneal specialist, so that corneal transplants are conducted in an effective manner. He also assured to take every possible step to convert the Ophthalmology Department of Government Medical College and Hospital, into Regional Institute of Ophthalmology.

MLA Sudhakar Kohale addressed the gathering and appreciated the work of Dr. Ashok Madan. He urged people to take a pledge to donate their eyes so that every person is able to enjoy this wonderful gift of sight. Videos regarding eye donation to be played in the OPD during the fortnight, were inaugurated by MLA Sudhakar Kohale. The videos are a method to increase awareness among the general public regarding eye donation.

The main attraction of the fortnight was a grand rally was flagged off by MLA, (Nagpur South Zone) Sudhakar Kohale, Dean of GMCH Dr Abhimanyu Niswade, along with Medical Superintendent Dr. Jagdish Hedao and Dr. Ashok Madan. The rally started from Ophthalmology Department of Government Medical College and Hospital. Around 500 students took part in the rally consisting of under-graduate students, nursing staff and students, doctors of the eye department and NCC cadets. During the Rally various slogans regarding eye donation like “During life donate Blood, After Death Donate Eyes”, “Eye Donation, Greatest donation”, “Donate Eyes. Donate Life” were made by the students. Pamphlets containing information regarding eye donation were distributed to the general public during the rally. Rally started from Medical Square crossed Ishwar Deshmukh College, where a skit was conducted by nursing students. When the rally reached medical square Dr Bhushan Chaukhe gave a speech to all those present regarding eye donation and urging everyone to make the pledge for eye donation.

The rally concluded at the eye Department. Dr Mona Deshmukh along with Dr Kavita Dhabarde, Dr Meenal Vyawhare, Dr. Snehal Bonde, Dr Rahul Dagwar and Dr Nilesh Gaddewar urged the students to continue to spread awareness regarding eye donation and thanked them for their support during the rally.

To make this rally a grand success Head of the Ophthalmology Department of Government Medical College and Hospital Dr Ashok Madan along with Associate Professor Dr. Mona Deshmukh, Senior Lecturer Dr. Kavita Dhabarde, Lecturers Dr. Meenal Vyawhare, Dr Snehal Bonde, Dr Nilesh Gaddewar, Dr Rahul Dagwar, all the Resident Staff and Staff of Ophthalmology Department worked extremely hard.
