Nagpur: In recent times, numerous spots in Nagpur have transformed into ‘open air bars’ where liquor and narcotics are consumed by anti-social elements. This has raised significant concerns among residents and authorities regarding public safety and order.
On Sunday, the Kotwali Police took action against individuals consuming liquor and narcotics at Reshimbagh Ground. Sportspersons using the ground alerted the police, leading to a raid. Several consumers and addicts were apprehended during this operation, highlighting the increasing trend of public substance abuse.
The gravity of the situation was underscored in April this year when a youngster was murdered at Mankarwadi Ground near Bhavani Nagar. The area had become notorious for open drinking and narcotics consumption. This incident shocked the city and prompted calls for stricter enforcement of laws against public substance abuse.
In response, the city police have initiated a comprehensive drive against open drinking, smoking, hookah usage, and other prohibited substances. The crackdown is particularly focused on areas within 100 meters of schools. The police are not only targeting peddlers but also consumers, addicts, and agents involved in the distribution of narcotics, tobacco, and hookah.
Concerns at Chhatrapati Square
Despite claims of intensified police patrolling, residents near Chhatrapati Square have raised alarms over the emergence of open daytime drinking spots. A vigilant resident reported seeing a group of half-a-dozen youngsters openly consuming liquor on the road divider and sleeping under a tree on Friday afternoon. Some of these individuals were also seen abusing each other while drinking. Although a concerned citizen alerted the police, the anti-socials had dispersed by the time the Dhantoli Police patrolling team arrived.
Residents expressed frustration, questioning why the concerned police station officials were not already aware of such illegal activities. They demanded stern action against the individuals turning the road into a ‘bar.’
The rising trend of open air bars in Nagpur poses a significant challenge to public order and safety. The city police’s recent actions demonstrate a commitment to addressing this issue, but ongoing vigilance and community cooperation are crucial. Residents’ concerns and reports play a vital role in supporting law enforcement efforts to curb illicit activities and ensure a safer environment for all.
