Rs 313 cr for ramping up power distribution, underground cable network in Nagpur

MSEDCL allocates the fund to energise power infra as power demand has risen by nearly 100 MW within a decade in Nagpur

Nagpur: Here is some good news on the power front vis-a-vis Nagpur as Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has allocated Rs 313 crore for strengthening power infrastructure in the Second Capital of State.

According to the directives of Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Devendra Fadnavis, MSEDCL has issued work orders worth Rs 238 crore to strengthen the electricity distribution network in Nagpur city and its surrounding areas. Additionally, a decision has been made to float tenders for works worth Rs 75 crore. MSEDCL’s Chairman and Managing Director Lokesh Chandra stated that approval has also been granted for work worth Rs 46 crore for underground power cables in the Nagpur South-West Assembly constituency.

The fund allocation is to deal with rising power demand in Nagpur. Power demand has risen by nearly 100 MW within a decade as these days every household relies more on electric gadgets. Also the changes in atmosphere means more and more homes are now equipped with air conditioners for which the power demand is much more. However, along with the rising power demand, the need for ramping up the infra has been increasing since last two-year in the city. The emerging suburbs on the outskirts are frequently witnessing power snags.

Lokesh Chandra, Managing Director, MSEDCL, informed about the funds allocation while chairing a review meeting of Nagpur Region, on Thursday. MSEDCL is focusing on strengthening the distribution system as Nagpur and its surrounding areas are growing rapidly. The pace of urbanisation is quite fast and hence necessary upgradation of ground machinery is necessary for which a detailed programme is planned for implementation. He said that financial investment is rising in the city and its surrounding areas and as such the demand for electricity also is increasing.

To meet the rising demand, MSEDCL is focusing on ramping up its infrastructure for faster rollout of new connections and improving supply quality along with it. Post completion of work, the power supply network in Mahal, Gandhibagh, Civil Lines, Congress Nagar, Butibori in Urban centres and at Katol, Saoner, Mauda and Umred in the Rural section will improve considerably.

New 132 KV Transformers: During the meeting, Chandra also informed about steps to increase 132 KV transformer numbers in city to ease the burden on existing, Besa, Pardi, Uppalwadi, Hingna 1 & 2, Khapri and Mankapur sub-stations of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL). While work on Jat Traodi 132/11 KV is in final stage, new sites have been identified as Lendra Park, MIHAN besides adding 50 MVA transformers at Besa, Mankapur and Pardi sub-centres

From the Rs 313 crore, MSEDCL is going to put in new cables from its high tension Uppalwadi, Ambazari, Jat Tarodi, and Khaparkheda 33 KV sub-stations at a cost of Rs. 95 crore. Similarly, Rs. 67.18 crore are going to be utilised in Mahal sub-division for upgradation of 33/11 KV Besa, Manewada and Shrikrishna Nagar substations, Rs. 13.74 crore for Gandhibagh sub-division, Rs. 18.07 crore for Congress Nagar, Rs. 11.23 crore for Civil Lines.

Also in view of rising power demand in Nagpur Rural, MSEDCL has approved an outlay of Rs 55 crore for improving the power infrastructure. As per the plans, the power infra in Mauda industrial area is going to be strengthened by installing new overhead wires. Further a 10 MVA transformer is going to be installed at Umred, Katol and Saoner sub-division. Prasad Reshme, Director (Projects), Paresh Bhagwat, Regional Director, Dhananjay Oundekar, Executive Director, and other senior officials were also present.
