Nagpur: In an extensive seven-hour interrogation on Monday, Crime Branch officials questioned Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) Sanket Gaikwad regarding the firing case in Nagpur RTO. Despite being posed with 27 questions, Gaikwad evaded providing answers and displayed a lack of cooperation with the investigation machinery.

A senior police official said that Gaiwad arrived at the Crime Branch office at 10.30 am and faced intense scrutiny from police officials until 5.30 pm. However, he consistently refused to answer the questions and even went on to say that he was not aware of any firing incident. Meanwhile, the investigators have unearthed the role of Senior RTO official in the firing case and are likely to arrest him on the criminal conspiracy charges.

The police investigation revealed that on May 5, 2022, MVI Geeta Shejwal fired a shot at MVI Gaikwad who initially attributed it to an accidental discharge of his service revolver during duty preparation. Gaikwad now faces allegations of providing false information to the police, creating a fabricated crime scene, and tampering with evidence, said police officials.

The inquiry has shed light on the central role of funds collected by the Flying Squad in triggering the firing incident. MVI Gaikwad, previously under the supervision of MVI Geeta Shejwal, headed the Flying Squad at RTO and allegedly engaged in fund collection with the approval of a senior official. This activity sparked a dispute with MVI Shejwal which led to the firing incident which emerged as a criminal conspiracy.

Security guard emerges as key witness:

A crucial development occurred as a security guard, stationed at Gaikwad’s posh apartment on Central Bazaar road, appeared before the Crime Branch. He provided an eyewitness account in the case. The guard testified that he heard a quarrel lasting approximately five minutes from Gaikwad’s flat, followed by the sound of firing shots.
