Rush hour blues: Nagpur Metro’s 2024 lost-&-found list includes phones, bicycles, and more!

Nagpur: The Nagpur Metro’s Lost-and-Found Cell has had a busy year, handling an impressive 1,290 misplaced items in 2024 — an over 161% rise compared to 2023. From mobile phones to bicycles, the diverse range of lost belongings highlights the challenges faced by commuters in a bustling metro system.

In 2023, 493 items were reported lost, of which 417 were successfully returned. However, the sharp rise in 2024 underscores the increasing footfall on the Metro, which boasts a network of 38 stations and an average daily ridership of over one lakh, peaking at 1.5 lakh on its busiest days.

What’s getting lost?

Mobile phones topped the list with 171 handsets reported missing, but the real surprise was the inclusion of 12 bicycles among the misplaced items. The lost-and-found inventory also included 125 tiffin bags, 91 umbrellas, 58 college bags, and smaller valuables like earpods (16) and watches (14). Unique finds such as cricket bats, power banks, and even clothing added to the 570 miscellaneous items catalogued last year.

Where are these items found?

According to Akhilesh Halve, Senior Deputy General Manager (Corporate Communication) of MahaMetro, most items are left behind on train seats, while others are discovered on station platforms or near escalators. “During peak hours, the rush to board or exit trains leads many commuters to inadvertently leave behind wallets, bags, and sometimes even larger items like bicycles,” he explained.

Returning the lost belongings

Out of the 1,290 items recorded in 2024, 764 were returned to their rightful owners, thanks to the efforts of the lost-and-found team. Passengers who misplace items can report the loss in person at any customer care centre within 24 hours or use the Nagpur Metro mobile app.

For items found unattended on trains or station premises, commuters are encouraged to inform Metro staff or hand them over to the nearest customer care centre. Once located, items can be claimed with valid ID proof, ensuring a secure return process.

The curious case of forgotten bicycles

The inclusion of bicycles in the lost-and-found statistics left many puzzled. Halve shed light on the situation, explaining that these cases, though rare, often occur when commuters juggle multiple belongings or rush to exit the train.

With Nagpur Metro’s ridership steadily climbing, the lost-and-found cell has become an indispensable service. “We recognize that every lost item, regardless of its size or value, holds significance to its owner. Our team is dedicated to ensuring a safe and smooth return process,” Halve concluded.
